FLYING V is slated to play as a guest team in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup as part of its buildup for the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
Team manager Joey Guillermo said the Thunder will get a test from UAAP and NCAA semifinalists last season - namely La Salle, San Beda, Ateneo, Arellano, Far Eastern University, Mapua, Adamson and Perpetual Help - during the preseason summer tournament.
But as a guest team, the result of the Thunder's games will not reflect in the team standings.
“As a sidelight to this tournament, since Flying V will also join the PBA D-League, the Thunder team will be a guest team and will have tune-ups with some of the teams in the preseason,” said Guillermo during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Golden Phoenix Hotel.
“They will be playing eight games as a sidelight. (They will be) non-bearing games,” said Guillermo.
Guillermo confirmed Jeron Teng will be playing for the Thunder in the Foundation Cup. But while Flying V already has some players in the roster, the team coached by former PBA and UAAP mentor Eric Altamirano is still in the process of building a competitive lineup around the former La Salle hotshot.
“We are still continuing the tryouts. We need to fill some positions na kulang pa kami," said Guillermo.
“Actually, entering the D-League, of course, we want to be competitive in our maiden participation. Of course, everybody would always say that we hope for the best. If we get the championship, why not? What is important is that when we participate in the conference, very competitive ‘yung team namin,” he added.
