FAR Eastern University is set to pursue a case against James Machate after Jed Marcaida, the real owner of Chadao, came out in the open following the two parties' falling out in the 2019 PBA D-League.
Team manager Richie Ticzon issued a clarification stating that the school is now filing a class suit against Machate and not against the milk tea company, as what the Tamaraws initially intended.
"After talking to the real owner, sir Jed Marcaida, James Machate is not a part owner of Chadao which he is trying to portray," said Ticzon.
"Machate gave FEU a check worth P1.5 million for FEU's D-League participation as Chadao, but the check bounced. Apparently, he also got P550,000 from Chadao to help with its tie-up with FEU. Chadao never agreed to sponsor FEU fully, but it was Machate who came to FEU to fully fund its D-League campaign."
Ticzon said that FEU has not heard from Machate since the checks bounced, leading to the school shedding away the partnership six games into the campaign in the 2019 season.
The amiable executive also took the chance to issue an apology to Chadao and Marcaida for any bad press the issue gave to the company.
"We are clearing Chadao’s name in this issue and we apologize to them for the negative write ups that came out. It is James Machate who didn't fulfill his obligations to FEU. In bad faith talaga ang ginawa niya sa amin," he said.
Aside from filing a case, Ticzon also bared that FEU is also seeking to raise this issue to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) so that teams will be forewarned of doing business with Machate.
"We intend to bring this up sa SBP para di na makaulit ang mga ganyang mga tao," he said.
Curiously, the National Basketball League (NBL) is also set to pursue actions against Machate for the same issue, this time with the Quezon City Rising Stars.
