DILIMAN College-Gerry's Grill pulled off a monumental 86-85 upset, shocking Marinerong Pilipino Thursday to make a late play to the playoffs in the 2019 PBA D-League at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Kevin Gandjeto drained the go-ahead freebie with 12.4 seconds to take the slim one-point lead before the Blue Dragons made life tough for Skippers' Mike Ayonayon and Art Aquino to get their shots up and come away with the victory.
"Marinero is a star-studded team, but we just stuck to our character. We won because of our defense and our character," said coach Rensy Bajar as Diliman-Gerry's joined Chadao-FEU at fourth place in the Foundation Group with their identical 4-3 cards.
The Beninese Gandjeto anchored the Blue Dragons with 29 points, 13 rebounds, and four rejections, while Joseph Brutas and Johnnel Bauzon both shot 3-of-4 from deep and finished with 15 points apiece.
It was a sorry defeat for the rejigged Marinerong Pilipino, which sunk to sixth place in the group and is now tied with Wangs Basketball with their 3-4 standing.
Ayonayon scored 16 points on a 5-of-21 clip from the field, to go with nine rebounds and six assists, but failed to play the role of the hero for the Skippers late.
Santi Santillan wound up with 15 points and six rebounds, as new recruit Jhonard Clarito tallied a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds.
