AMA University finally clicked on both ends of the floor to stun Keramix, 107-80, on Thursday and solidify its quarterfinal bid in the PBA D-League Foundation at the Ynares Arena in Pasig.
The Titans banked on an early offensive onslaught, before turning to a resolute defensive stand in the endgame to score the surprising blowout against a playoff contender that, however, missed Gilas Cadet standout Jiovani Jalalon.
James Martinez hit five three-pointers on the way to tallying 23 points, two on a jumper that gave the Titans their biggest lead at 35, late in the game, 105-70.
Dexter Maiquez, known for his defense, also registered 23 points along with eight boards and one block in just 21 minutes for the Titans, who drew another workmanlike effort from undersized big man Jay-R Taganas.
The rebounding demon came up with 16 boards, nine points, and four steals, playing all but two minutes of the game.
“Yung opensa naman namin talaga, nandun na eh,” insisted Titans coach Mark Herrera, whose team came in averaging 77.5 points in their first six games. “Every game, lumalamang kami sa umpisa, then sa huli lang kami natatalo lang dahil sa depensa.”
The Titans improved to a 3-4 win-loss card to climb two places to fourth, just behind their victims, who dropped to an even 3-3 slate.
