PHOENIX Petroleum is off to a solid start in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup, downing Wangs Basketball, 107-70, on Monday at Ynares Sports Arena.
Mac Belo of Far Eastern University scored 22 points and former UAAP rival Ed Daquioag of University of Santo Tomas added 20 for the Accelerators.
Belo’s FEU teammates Raymar Jose, Russel Escoto, Achie Inigo and Alfrancis Tamsi combined for 41 points as Phoenix Petroluem dominated the match and took a 48-point lead, 98-50, in the fourth quarter.
Belo scored a buzzer-beating triple to end the first quarter, 27-14.
“Hindi ko ineexpect na lopsided. Basta ang sinasbi ko sa kanila, ang pag-aaralan natin, how to play basketball consistently,” said Phoenix Petroleum coach Eric Gonzales.
“You’re up by 30, down by 30, it’s a tied ball game, you have to play consistent basketball.”
It was the first time that Daquioag and the Tamaraws played together since FEU defeated UST in the UAAP men’s basketball title in December last year.
Former Mapua star Jonathan Banal led Wangs Basketball with 17 points, Gwyne Capacio added 12, Bryan Ilad chipped in 11, while Francis Munsayac and Rey Publico each had 10 points.
