CIGNAL-Ateneo brutalized McDavid by 75 points, 106-31, to stretch its winning run to four in the 2019 PBA D-League on Tuesday at JCSGO Gym in Cubao.
The Blue Eagles limited McDavid to a record the lowest points total in a PBA D-League game
Cignal-Ateneo ran away early with a 31-6 first quarter in what was a precursor of the bloodbath that was about to happen.
Ange Kouame topped Cignal-Ateneo's all-out attack with a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Thirdy Ravena also had 16 points and pulled down three rebounds, while Mike Nieto scored all of his 11 points in the first half pullaway, while also grabbing three boards as the Blue Eagles improved to 6-1 in the Aspirants Group.
McDavid shot a paltry 21-percent and dropped to 1-5.
The game allowed coach Tab Baldwin to experiment to prepare for the more important games.
"As you go through a year, an offseason, a preseason campaign, your system should grow," said Baldwin. "Today, we did use a couple of different things that we may or may not use but we teach our players some things that they can have in their arsenal. We may not run it very well but we're exposing them in different types of offensive and defensive systems."
Baldwin was also happy to see Cignal-Ateneo's chemistry prevailing that led to the demolition of McDavid, saying, "When you come out against a team that relies more on chemistry than talent, it's really hard for a team like McDavid which has what you can say is a revolving roster. If your chemistry is the most important part of the team, it's difficult for teams like them and today was an example for that."
The 75-point drubbing was one-point short of tying the record for the biggest winning margin of 76, set by Tanduay when it clobbered Zark's Burgers, 141-65, on July 10, 2017.
McDavid's 31 points was 10 off the league’s previous low, with PC Gilmore losing 71-41 to Boracay Rum on Jan. 10, 2012.
Marlon Monte scored 11 points.
