CENTRO Escolar University coach Yong Garcia was all smiles even after Cignal swept the Scorpions in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup finals on Thursday.
In a conference where the Scorpions were written off before it even began, Garcia had nothing to frown about as the team exceeded expectations with an improbable run to the finals.
To arrange a showdown against the Hawkeyes, they even stunned the once-invincible Flying V led by Jeron Teng in the semifinals.
But Garcia felt that rousing series victory did more good than harm for the Scorpions.
Garcia said his wards were so elated to win the best-of-three semis series that they lost the fire in the finale where it mattered most.
"Tingin ko dahil nag-overachieve yung team, nawala yung fire nila. Nakuntento na sila. Dun ko sila sinabihan na pag may ganitong opportunity dapat i-grab natin at ibigay," he said.
Still, it was a learning expeirence that will go a long way for the young team bannered by JK Casino, Orlan Wamar, Aaron Jeruta, and Rod Ebondo.
Garcia said he's proud of what his team achieved in the tournament against squads featuring former pros and amateur standouts from popular collegiate leagues.
"I'm so proud of my players dahil talagang binigay nila yung best kaya kami umabot dito," he said.
Now that their D-League campaign came to a close, Garcia said they will shift their focus to the Universities and Colleges Basketball League where they are the defending champions.
"Focus muna kami sa mother league namin, sa UCBL. After nun maghahanda kami sa next seaon ng D-League," he said.
