Hawkeyes look to complete sweep of Tile Masters in D-League Aspirants Cup finals

    Apr 3, 2017

CIGNAL-San Beda looks to complete a sweep of Racal on Monday in the D-League Aspirants Cup final at The Arena in San Juan.

Coach Boyet Fernandez is eyeing his seventh title as he tries to steer Cignal-San Beda to the championship in its debut.

Game Two of the best of three final is set at 4 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan

Fernandez believes it won't be a walk in the park, although the young San Beda squad led by Jason Perkins and former pro Pamboy Raymundo has shown it can overpower the Racal side bannered by NCAA all-stars like Kent Salado, Rey Nambatac and Sydney Onwubere.

"Racal is a team capable of coming back. If you give Racal that kind of defense we had in fourth quarter, then we have a problem," said Fernandez, referring to the fourth quarter meltdown in Game One where the Hawkeyes saw a 21-point lead sliced to five.

"It’s more of putting on the minds of my players that it’s not yet over until it’s over," he said.

Racal coach Jerry Codinera, meanwhile, is still confident they can force a deciding match in their breakthrough season where the Tile Masters make the finals for the first time since they joined the league in 2014.

"Bihira kami umabot sa ganito. We'll try to equalize first, we'll try to do better in practice and be in one page," Codinera said, who led the team to the final in his first conference at the helm.

"Siyempre we keep on adjusting e, nalilito yung mga bata, pero hopefully we'll do better."

"We'll try to keep it close. We'll keep it at striking distance," he said.
