BORACAY Rum stunned league-leading Blackwater Sports, 96-89, on Thursday to forge a three-way tie for fourth place in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Waves posted an 18-point lead after a 17-3 run to pull away from a close 54-50 game in the third period.
Paolo Taha was instrumental in that third-quarter run, scoring 10 of his game-high 24 points for the Waves, who improved to 6-4.
The victory forced a triple tie for fourth place with Cagayan Valley and EA Regen Medical Group. The fourth placer grabs a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.
“Hindi na namin iniisip ’yung nakaraan,” said Boracay Rum coach Lawrence Chongson. “We are just hoping for the best. Ang emphasis namin, win or go home. A whole new ballgame kapag nakapasok kami sa quarterfinals.”
Blackwater Sports suffered its second straight loss after being downed by NLEX last week.
The Elite, with a 7-3 win-loss card, slipped to second spot after NLEX defeated Informatics 96-64.
The Elite is also just half a game ahead of Fruitas (6-3).
Julius Pasculado finished with 15 points and five assists, while Stephen Siruma also added 15 markers. Ken Acibar and Maclean Sabellina each had 10 points.
