BLACKWATER Sports ran away in the third quarter and maintained the gap in the fourth for a 79-69 win over Boracay Rum in Game One of their Foundation Cup semifinals on Tuesday at the Blue Eagle Gym to move closer to its first PBA D-League finals appearance.
The Elite shattered a 35-35 tie at the half, outscoring the Waves, 24-13, in the third period including a blistering 18-6 run.
Allan Mangahas had an all-around effort of 14 points, six rebounds, and eight assists to push his team ahead in the best-of-three affair.
“I just told the boys to play two good quarters,” said Blackwater Sports coach Leo Isaac. “And sometimes, when you challenge your players, they respond to the challenge.”
Game Two is set on Thursday at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Gio Ciriacruz topscored for the Elite with 16 points, while Justin Chua added 12 markers. Eric Suguitan had 10 points including six in the third for Blackwater Sports.
“We sustained our defensive intensity and our attack offensively. That is why bumitaw na rin siguro ang Boracay,” said Isaac, who is eyeing his first finals appearance in an amateur league since his Blu Detergent lost to Ateneo-Negros Navigation in the 2002 season of the defunct Philippine Basketball League.
Maclean Sabellina had 15 points for the Waves in their first semifinal game in the league. Jeff Viernes had 14 points, while Jonathan Fernandez chipped in 10 markers.
