DEFENDING champion Blackwater Sports faces Boracay Rum on Monday as the race for quarterfinal berths intensify in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup.
The Elite (3-3) battle the Waves (3-4) in the first game of an exciting tripleheader at 10 a.m. at the JCSGO gym as both teams try to gain headway in the battle for quarterfinal spots.
Blackwater Sports holds fourth place following a 93-91 loss to Cagayan Valley last week. Despite being in contention for the semifinal slots, three teams are right on Blackwater’s tail including Boracay Rum.
The top two teams at the end of the single-round eliminations gain an outright berth in the semifinals while the third to sixth-ranked squads will advance to the quarterfinals.
“We don’t want to be thinking of any pressure,” said Blackwater Sports coach Leo Isaac before their game against Boracay Rum. “We just want to play a good game on Monday,” Isaac said.
Boracay Rum is one of three teams in joint fifth place along with Big Chill and Cagayan Valley and a win will boost its chances of making it to the quarterfinals.
“We really need to rediscover our desire to win ballgames before even worrying about our opponent,” Boracay Rum coach Lawrence Chongson said. “If we can do that, then probably our chance will get better.”
Café France (2-4) and Cagayan Valley (3-4) also battle at 12 noon in another game with playoff implications.
The Bakers have lost four straight games to drop to eighth place in the standings.
In the third game, Derulo Accelero (1-6) looks for its second straight win against Hog’s Breath Café (2-5) at 2 p.m.
Standings: NLEX 7-0, Cebuana Lhuillier 5-2, Jumbo Plastic 5-2, Blackwater Sports 3-3, Big Chill 3-4, Cagayan Valley 3-4, Boracay Rum 3-4, Café France 2-4, Hog’s Breath Café 2-5, Derulo Accelero 1-6.
