GAMBOA Coffee-St. Clare whipped league-leader Centro Escolar University, 100-83, on Thursday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Coffee Lovers improved their record to 5-3 to remain among the contenders for the six spots in the next phase of the tournament.
“May three games pa kami. Ang habol namin talaga ’yung three and four. Crucial pa rin ’yung tatlong game,” said Gamboa Coffee coach Jino Manansala, referring to the twice-to-beat advantage for the teams that finish in third and fourth places at the end of the eliminations.
The Scorpions dropped to 7-2 snapping a four-game winning streak.
CEU played much of the match without Rodrigue Ebondo, who suffered a back injury in the first half. He only scored six points in 10 minutes.
“Ginrab na namin ’yung pagkakataon,” Manansala said.
The Coffee Lovers were already up, 27-15, at the end of the first quarter, and poured it on in the second period, outscoring the Scorpions, 31-17.
Cris Bitoon had 19 points, four rebounds and five assists, while Trevis Jackson had 18 points for the Coffee Lovers.
