BIG CHILL kept its playoff hopes alive by defeating EA Regen Medical Group, 77-73, in its final elimination-round game in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Mac Montilla and Terrence Romeo came up huge in the second half, Jeckster Apinan had a double-double effort against his former team, and the Superchargers finished the elimination phase with a 6-5 win-loss slate.
Big Chill will now wait as its quarterfinal chances now lie on other teams. The Superchargers are currently in seventh place due to a higher winning percentage.
The Superchargers are behind EA Regens (5-4), Boracay Rum (5-4), while breathing down their necks are Cebuana Lhuillier (5-5), Café France (5-5), and Jumbo Plastic (4-5) as it remains a tight race for the playoffs.
The third to sixth placers will advance to the quarterfinals with the higher-ranked teams having twice-to-beat edge against their opponents.
“We will wait and pray,” said Big Chill coach Robert Sison.
Montilla finished with 18 points while Romeo added 17 as they combined for 20 of the 39 Big Chill points in the second half. Apinan, who the team got in exchange for Alex Nuyles, had 15 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals.
A 7-0 run completed by an Apinan putback and a Romeo lay-up broke a 65-65 deadlock to win the game for Big Chill, which led for the most of the game.
“We just want to concentrate on this game. The guys were so focused. Parang no tomorrow na itong larong ito, pumukpok talaga sila,” said Sison, who is now hoping for divine intervention.
“Siyempre gusto naming makapasok. It’s all up to Him. It’s not in our hands anymore,” said Sison.
The Regens, who got 18 points and 21 rebounds from Raymund Almazan, are now tied with Boracay Rum for fifth place with 5-4.
In his first game in a Regens uniform, Nuyles had 15 points and five assists.
