THE battle for the last outright semifinal spot heats up as Big Chill collides with Cagayan Valley on Thursday in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the Arellano gym.
NLEX clinched the first semifinal spot early by finishing the elimination round with a 9-1 record, and now four teams are left to battle it out for the other berth.
Big Chill is in joint second with idle Blackwater Sports at 5-2 and will look to grab solo second when it clashes with Cagayan Valley, which is tied for fourth place with Fruitas at 4-3.
Gametime is at 2 p.m., with the Superchargers hoping to score back-to-back wins. The Superchargers beat Erase XFoliant, 88-68, on December 18 to break their two-game losing skid.
The Rising Suns, on the other hand, entered the Christmas break on a two-game skid after losing to Cebuana Lhuillier and Jose Rizal University by a total of just seven points.
“We know how tight the race for the outright semis berth is,” Big Chill coach Robert Sison said. “Solid defense was lacking in our past two losses and we gave away high scores to our opponents. That’s what we are giving emphasis in our practices and we intend to show and make sure that solid defense should always be present in our games.”
In the second game, bottom dwellers Boracay Rum and Erase XFoliant collide at 4 p.m.
The Waves and the Erasers are tied for ninth place at 2-5 but are still are still in contention for the quarterfinals.
The third to sixth placers play in the quarterfinals.
