BIG Chill hurt Jumbo Plastic’s chances of an automatic entry into the semifinals after pulling off a 50-46 win on Tuesday in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup at the JCSGO gym in Quezon City.
Mar Villahermosa had 13 of his 19 points in the final quarter as the Superchargers (4-4) gathered themselves in time after losing a 16-point lead in the second period to grab hold of the fifth spot in the standings.
With the defeat, Jumbo Plastic (5-3) joined Cebuana Lhuillier in a tie for second place with Blackwater Sports (4-3) on its tail in the race for the final semifinal slot.
The loss could be crucial for the Giants, who will lose the tiebreaker (winner-over-the-other) if they end up in a tie for second place with the Gems at the end of the elimination round.
The top two teams advance outright to the semifinals, while the next best four teams play in the quarterfinals.
Big Chill was already up, 25-9, in the second quarter but Jumbo Plastic came storming back.
Villahermosa put the Superchargers ahead again with a triple, 42-41, with 6:12 left in the fourth quarter of the low-scoring affair.
He hit another triple with 1:24 remaining in the game for a 47-43 lead, a cushion they went on to keep to occupy the fifth spot in the team standings.
The win was huge for Big Chill, which needed a push in the standings and a boost in morale ahead of their final eliminations match on Thursday against NLEX.
“I challenged the guys to step up in this game,” said Big Chill coach Robert Sison. “It’s a must-win for us because our next game is against NLEX. We really needed this game to boost our morale and our chances going to the playoffs.”
“I had a very good support from my coaching staff. Maganda ’yung mga feed nila sa akin and I really give my best coaching here because it’s a do-or-die for us and the season is on the line,” Sison added.
Janus Lozada added 12 points for the Superchargers.
Jason Ballesteros had 15 points and 20 rebounds for the Giants, who will face Café France next week to wrap up their elimination round campaign.
