BATANGAS pulled off the biggest heist in the 2018 PBA D-League Foundation Cup so far, shocking Centro Escolar University, 96-90, on Monday at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Clark Derige uncorked 28 points and seven rebounds to give the Generals and coach Oliver Bunyi their breakthrough win through two games in the conference.
Cedric de Joya came off the bench and poured in 20 points, four assists, and three boards, while Christian Manalo came up big in the end game with his 18, including the big baskets that gave Batangas an 85-78 lead in the final 4:29.
“We played as a team at yun naman ang strength namin,” said the debuting mentor.
“When we play individually, talagang parating disadvantage sa amin. But ang pinaka-importante dito is yung resiliency nila because they didn’t give up even if we were under pressure.”
De Joya’s triple triggered an 11-4 blast to propel Batangas to a decisive 89-81 lead with 3:01 remaining as the Generals did enough to hold off the Scorpions in the clutch.
Batangas also won the open court, scoring 24 fastbreak points to CEU’s six.
Pierce Chan led the Scorpions in the losing effort with 17 points on a 4-of-8 shooting from downtown, while Rich Guinitaran got 16.
