CAFÉ FRANCE bounced back from a huge loss and drubbed Erase Xfoliant, 73-58, in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Thursday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
The Bakers, coming off a 15-point defeat to Cagayan Valley, built a twin-digit lead over Erase Xfoliant at the half and never looked back to register their second win in three games for fourth spot in the standings.
It was actually Café France’s first on-court victory. The Bakers lost their first match but were later awarded the victory after the league found Fruitas’ Joseph Eriobu to be ineligible to play due to incomplete citizenship documents.
The Bakers recovered from a sluggish first quarter and came charging with 27 points in the second frame, shooting 58.8 percent from the field while holding Erase Xfoliant to just eight points for a 40-29 lead at the half.
Erase Xfoliant scored nine unanswered points in the third period to cut the deficit to four, 38-42, but Cafe France used a 14-2 run in the final quarter to regain full control 68-50.
Jens Knuttel’s basket stretched Café France’s lead to 20, 72-52 with 1:40 left to play.
“Sa wakas nanalo din,” said Cafe France coach Egay Macaraya. “Nagfocus sa depensa mga bata at nagrelax din sa depensa ang Erase. Binigyan nila kami ng chance kaya ginanahan mga bata.”
Roger Pogoy led the Bakers with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Mike Parala added 12, John Jamon and Alvin Padilla both finished with 10 markers.
Knuttel had 11 points and was responsible for 12 of Cafe France’s 24 assists.
Jett Vidal and George Allen had 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Erase Xfoliant, which dropped to fifth spot with a 2-2 record.
