NLEX relied on its Gilas cadets players to beat Arellano-Air21, 93-60, on Monday at the start of its campaign in the PBA D-League Aspirants Cup at the JCSGO gym in Quezon City.
Garvo Lanete led the Road Warriors with 19 points including 17 in the second half to pull away from the Chiefs. Matt Ganuelas added 10 of his 16 points in the second half, and Kevin Alas chipped in 12 markers.
Lanete, Ganuelas, and Alas, part of the national team to the 2013 Southeast Asian Games in Myanmar, helped the Road Warriors pull away for good by outscoring the Chiefs, 56-33, in the second half.
The Road Warriors have a school tie-up with San Beda but with the Red Lions recently being crowned NCAA champion on Saturday, head coach Boyet Fernandez relied mostly on the holdovers.
Among the San Beda players, Ola Adeogun got the most minutes with 13 but was able to contribute nine points and seven rebounds. Baser Amer only played two minutes.
“I just want to give them the feel of the court kasi iba ‘yung D-League sa NCAA,” said Fernandez.
John Bangga had 14 points, Levi Hernandez added 11 points for the Chiefs, who dropped to 1-3.
