WANGS Basketball locked down on defense to halt Marinerong Pilipino's two-game winning streak with an 88-78 victory on Thursday in the 2019 PBA D-League at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
Arvin Tolentino shot 3-of-7 from threes, finishing with 32 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks to guide the Couriers to their second win in three outings.
The trio of Gelo Vito, Darius Estrella and Radge Tongco did wonders for Wangs in the fourth quarter as they went on a 13-0 start to turn a tight 58-57 lead to a 71-57 advantage with 6:31 remaining.
Vito had 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists off the bench, Estrella added 10 points and five boards, while Tongco got 11 points and three assists as they secured the Couriers win in the payoff period.
The Skippers still tried to make a late fightback, with Jed Mendoza's split from the line getting them within seven, 77-70 with 3:02 left, but Tolentino delivered the killer and-one that brought the lead back up to 10 points, 80-70, with 2:32 to play.
Axel Inigo recorded 10 points, four rebounds and four assists for Wangs.
"Malaking isda ang Marinero. Napakalaking bagay sa amin na napaghandaan namin ang team nila," said coach Pablo Lucas as the Couriers improved to 2-1 in the Foundation Group.
