COLEGIO de San Lorenzo got clutch baskets from Charles Callano down the stretch and the Griffins completed a two-game sweep of the Universities and Colleges Basketball League finals with a 71-65 win over the Centro Escolar University Scorpions on Monday at the Olivarez Sports Center in Parañaque City.
While it was Jan Formento who led all scorers for the Griffins, it was guard Callano who delivered the lethal blows as the Griffins dethroned the Scorpions.
The Griffins, mentored by Boni Garcia, took the opener 86-78.
Formento, who sparked the team’s decisive breakaway in the middle quarters, finished with 23 points spiked by five triples while the 5-foot-7 Callano added 19 points, including a lay-up off a counter steal against CEU counterpart Judel Fuentes for a 69-63 lead with 23.8 seconds left.
“This means a lot,” said Garcia, recalling the pain when the Scorpions eliminated them in the semifinals last year. “Before we arrived here, I told my players to dream that they’re cutting the net, they’re celebrating with their teammates and our fans. Just dream of being the champions and we will all work hard for it. I think they were inspired by that.”
Big man Soulemane Chabi Yo was also at his usual best, coming through with 12 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and three assists to validate his winning the Best Foreign Player award.
Technological Institute of the Philippines star Jorey Napoles was named as the tournament MVP.
The 6-foot-3 Napoles was joined in the Mythical Team by last year’s MVP Dominck Fajardo and Paul de la Cruz of Bulacan State University, Diliman College’s Jerico Mondala and Rommel Saliente of newcomer Lyceum-Batangas.
