    Aug 19, 2013

SOUTHWESTERN University overcame numerous turnovers in the endgame to edge University of the Visayas, 70-66, in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Monbert Arong scored 19 points to lead the Cobras to their third win in as many outings.

Mark Jayven Tallo finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three assists while African import Landry Sanjo added nine markers and 13 rebounds.

John Abad had 20 points, Wowie Escosio added 11 points and 12 boards for UV, which dropped to 2-1.

The Cobras led, 65-55, after a layup by Tallo and a floater by Adams Mohammed with 3:18 left on the clock. But UV refused to back down and came to within one, 66-67, after an 11-2 run led by Abad and Escosio.

The Lancers had a chance to snatch the lead after the Cobras committed a 24-second shot clock violation. But Abad turned from hero to goat in an instant as he threw the ball away on UV’s next offensive, giving possession back to SWU with 34.8 remaining.

UV got a double black eye on Saturday as their juniors squad also faltered, losing to the defending champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles, 78-60.

Philippine under-16 team member Arnie Padilla led Sacred Heart with 15 points while Gio Laguyo and Zachy Huang had 11 apiece.

In other games, University of Southern Philippines Foundation (2-0) beat Cebu Institute of Technology-University (1-3), 80-70, while Cebu Eastern College (4-1) defeated University of San Jose-Recoletos (0-4) 69-65.
