'He's the best man for the job,' ex-Gilas coach Chot Reyes says of successor Tab Baldwin

    Dec 24, 2014

CHOT Reyes saw the potential when he first tapped Tab Baldwin as a consultant.

Nothing has changed for Reyes now that Baldwin has his old job.

The former Gilas Pilipinas coach believes his successor has what it takes to lead the national team in its quest for international basketball glory, sustaining what he started.

“I think he’s the best man for the job,” Reyes told on Wednesday. “I’m happy for him and I think the Gilas program is in good hands.”

Baldwin was officially named the new Gilas mentor on Tuesday, replacing Reyes, who brought the American-New Zealander to the country last year to serve as consultant for the Fiba World Cup and the Asian Games.

The 56-year-old  Baldwin, who beat out local counterparts who have head-coaching jobs in the PBA, has handled three national squads in the past — those of Jordan, Lebanon, and his native New Zealand, which he steered to an impressive semifinal finish in the Fiba World Championships in 2002.

A concurrent Talk ’N Text consultant, Baldwin will lead Gilas in next year’s Fiba Asia Championship and its ambitious quest to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics as well as the 2019 Fiba World Cup, which the country is bidding to host.
