MINGLANILLA - History beckoned the boys from Sisters of Mary School Boystown in Cebu as they took part in the Manok ng Bayan-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 3x3 on Saturday.
Little did they know that they weren't only setting records, but also reaping the rewards for all of their efforts.
The event is not only aiming to break the world records for most kids simultaneously playing 3x3 basketball and the largest Fiba-sanctioned event, but also to accumulate much needed points to boost the country's ranking in Fiba 3x3.
Chooks-to-Go president Ronald Mascarinas donated P100,000 to the school and also pledged to give the same amount monthly to aid the charitable institution as a token of gratitude to the young men and women.
"When I walked in here, ang daming nagpapasalamat sa amin. Pero kami talaga ang nagpapasalamat sa inyo. At such a young age, you are already giving back to the country as the points we will accumulate here will help in our journey to the 2020 Olympics," he said.
"That is why on top of the P100,000, we are going to give P100,000 every month to help continue the cycle of goodness by the sisters here."
The monetary aid will be used for the continued operations of the school, which is housing over 2,000 kids from poor families in Cebu.
"Sa totoo lang, umiiyak yung heart ko," said SMS-Boystown athletic director Van Parmis. "I'm happy and blessed sa Boystown and Girlstown kasi yung Chooks-to-Go magbibigay ng P100,000 per month. Malaking bagay yan sa mga opportunities ng bata. Yung wish namin natupad na dahil sa Chooks-to-Go at dahil din sa SBP na na-recognize yung Boystown."
"The kids' happiness is our happiness," said Sis. Laresa Morasa, SM.
The SBP lauded the generosity of the main benefactor of 3x3 basketball as they continue to gear up for the Olympics in 2020.
"Napagusapan lang namin is magbibigay sila ng P100,000. Yung magbibigay siya ng monthly, on-the-spot yun," said SBP executive director Sonny Barrios. "Si Boss Ronald lang ang nagsabi dahil natuwa siya sa nakita niyang reception at involvement ng mga bata at mga madre."
