REIGNING champion Chiang Kai Shek College, San Beda-A, and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu swept their matches in the group stage to move to the semifinals of the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) national finals on Friday in different venues in Pasig City.
Fran Yu scored 21 points as CKSC Dragons beat St. John-Bacolod, 95-43, for their second straight win of the day at the PhilSports Arena. The Dragons beat Baguio City, 115-54, earlier in the day in Group D at the Meralco Gym.
The NCAA champions Red Cubs, meanwhile, beat Lucena, 67-55, at the Meralco Gym.
Over at the Philsports Arena, Marc Diputado had 17 points, while Joshua Caracut added 14 in San Beda-A’s 88-73 win over Castillejos National High School-Zambales.
The Magis Eagles beat Naga, 100-61, and Davao, 83-64, at the Ynares Arena to likewise post a 2-0 win-loss slate in Group E.
CKSC will join Sacred Heart, and San Beda-B in the first semifinal bracket while San Beda-A, National University and Lyceum-Cavite make up the other group.
The top team from each group at the end of the round-robin semifinals starting 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena will play in the championship game set Sunday at the Meralco Gym.
San Beda-A coach JB Sison appeared unsatisfied with the two wins by the Red Cubs.
“Nakita ko ‘yung ibang games, blowout. Kami lang ‘yung dikit,” said Sison.
CKSC coach Goldwin Monteverde said his wards are determined to win their second straight NBTC crown.
“Challenge ito sa kanila dahil sila ang defending champions,” said Monteverde.
