REIGNING champion Chiang Kai Shek College arranged a semifinal showdown with NCAA titlists Mapua in the 5th Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship MEC Networks Cup after beating separate foes on Thursday at the SGS gym in Quezon City.
The Blue Dragons leaned on Miguel Oczon to beat Arellano, 76-61, while the Brian Lacap-led the Red Robins to a 71-68 victory over Far Eastern University-Diliman in their quarterfinal matches.
The semifinal match between unbeaten squads Chiang Kai Shek College and Mapua is set on Saturday, 3:30 p.m. at the SGS gym before the other pairing between Adamson and La Salle Greenhills at 1:30 p.m.
The championship game is set Sunday at the SGS gym.
Oczon hit 7-of-18 from three-point range to finish with 23 points as the Blue Dragons remained unbeaten heading into their semifinal match-up with the Red Robins.
Lacap finished with 21 points after making four out of six three-point attempts, as the Red Robins hit three straight triples to take the lead, 65-59, in the fourth quarter.
Romuel Junsay had 16 points, while Bryan Samudio added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Red Robins.
But Mapua coach Randy Alcantara wasn’t impressed with how his wards played against FEU.
“We started the second half slow. Naka-buwelo sila (FEU). Sabi ko lang sa mga bata, kung ayaw nila maglaro, wag na silang pumasok ng court. Buti na lang bumalik at nag-connect ‘yung three points ni Lacap,” said Alcantara.
Alcantara sees a tough battle against the Blue Dragons, who also ruled the recent Filipino Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation (FCAAF) season.
“Kumpleto sila. Maganda ang tinatakbo nila. Kung ganito ang maging laro namin, tatambakan kami,” said Alcantara.
