Giant-killer Chiang Kai Shek brings down Junior Archers to claim maiden PSSBC title

Players and supporters of Chiang Kai Shek College celebrate after winning the 2015 Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championships (PSSBC) Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Cup on Sunday.

CHIANG Kai Shek College completed its giant-killing spree with an 85-82 win over De La Salle-Zobel to capture the 2015 Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championships (PSSBC) Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Cup on Sunday at the SGS Gym in Quezon City.

A day after dethroning San Beda, 65-58, Chiang Kai Shek once again leaned on the clutch shooting of Miguel Oczon and Martin Galinato to cap an unbeaten run in the eight-day long tournament presented by Jumbo Plastic Linoleum.

Oczon and Galinato had every answer each time the Junior Archers made a rally, with Oczon's three-pointer giving the Blue Dragons a 72-62 cushion at the start of the fourth period.

But the Junior Archers, who were coming off a 44-point destruction of Hope Christian High School in the semis, had one more run left as they threatened at 84-82 on two free throws by Martin Romero.

A window was even left open for La Salle when Chiang Kai Shek committed a turnover with 19 second remaining.

But tournament MVP Aljun Melecio bungled a three-point try in the Junior Archers’ possession, with CKS’ Joshua Ramirez securing the rebound to end the threat.

Chiang Kai Shek thus became the second school from the Fil-Chinese Amateur Athletic Federation (FCAAF) to win the ‘Battle for Champions’ title for high school after Hope Christian.

Other winners were NCAA teams San Sebastian two years ago and San Beda last year.

“Yung depensa namin nung first half really set the tone for the game. Eventually gumanda laro ng La Salle. Buti na lang yung composure ng mga bata andoon na," said CKS coach Goldwyn Monteverde.

Oczon, who was later named Finals MVP, led the Blue Dragons with 21 points, Galinato had 13 points and five assists, while Jonas Tibayan finished with 13 and 10 boards in the event also sponsored by MEC Networks, Dickies Underwear, Freego, Rain or Shine, Ironcon Builders, Hapee Toothpaste and Blackwater Sports with Molten as official ball.

Melecio and Marvin Sario had 16 points apiece for the Junior Archers, but the two combined for just 2-of-19 from three-point land.
