DEFENDING champion Centro Escolar University tries to boost its bid for the No. 1 seed when it collides with streaking Olivarez College in the resumption of the 2nd Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) on Saturday at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.
Though already assured of a twice-to-beat incentive in the semis, the CEU Scorpions still need to beat the Sea Lions in their 12 noon showdown to have a better chance of securing the top spot in the next round.
CEU coach Yong Garcia, however, is hoping their 9-day break won’t affect the flow of their game especially against a team playing on their home turf.
The Scorpions, who are tied for the lead with the Colegio de san Lorenzo at 10-1, clobbered the Sea Lions, 60-43, the first time they clashed since their lopsided finals last year.
But Garcia sees a tight contest this time.
The Olivarez Sea Lions, for one, are on a roll, having won their last six games for an 8-3 mark.
“I want to see that same desire and hunger from my players since we’re already preparing ourselves for the playoffs,” said Garcia. “We might even face them (Sea Lions) in the Final Four so it’s a must for us to have that psychological edge too.”
Olivarez coach Mike Saguiguit revenge will be the team’s biggest motivation, saying: “They embarrassed us before our home fans the last time so I’m sure my players are raring to earn some measure of revenge.”
Clashing in a no-bearing match at 2 o’clock are Technological Institute of the Philippines and Bulacan State University.
