THE Centro Escolar University Scorpions continued their astounding performance in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup, downing National University, 61-58, at The Arena in San Juan on Wednesday to stay unbeaten in the preseason tournament.

Samboy de Leon had 19 points, hitting four of 10 attempts from three-point range to lead the Scorpions to their fifth victory.

De Leon also grabbed nine rebounds as the Scorpions handed the Bulldogs (3-1) their first loss in Group C.

NU has lost for only the second time in the tournament in the last two years, after going undefeated en route to the 2012 crown and losing its only game against University of the East in the championship game last year.

“It’s just the beginning,” said CEU coach Egay Macaraya. “We want to try our best to be one of the best collegiate teams in the Philippines.”

Joseph Sedurifa added 10 points, making 2-of-5 3-point attempts for CEU, which will try to sweep the elimination round against San Sebastian next week.

The Scorpions took a 48-33 lead early in the fourth. De Leon also hit a crucial three with three minutes left in the game as the Scorpions survived a late run by the Bulldogs.

“Sinuwerte lang po sa tira,” said De Leon of his shooting effort.

Alfred Aroga had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who were still able to trim the deficit to three points with 11.5 seconds left. But Aroga missed a game-tying three in the end.

    The scores:

    CEU (61) – De Leon 19, Sedurifa 10, Batino 9, Casino 8, Opiso 5, Ebondo 4, Jeruta 4, Abundo 2, Mutombo 0, Vargas 0, Banua 0, Amil 0.
