THE Centro Escolar University Scorpions defeated the Olivarez College Sea Lions, 59-38, on Thursday to sweep the finals of the inaugural Universities and Colleges Basketball League finals at the Olivarez College gym in Paranaque City.
The Scorpions adds teh UCBL to their collection after dominating the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities.
CEU limited Olivarez to only two points in the third quarter, the field goal coming with only one second remaining in the period.
“They played a monster defense in the third quarter. Dinoble nila ‘yung effort nila,” said head coach Yong Garcia.
Patrick Aquino scoed 14, while Rodrigue Ebondo added 13 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks for the Scorpions.
Point guard Orlan Wamar had 10 points and four rebounds for CEU to take the finals Most Valuable Player award.
The Sea Lions took a 14-13 lead but scored eight in the second quarter to trail, 28-22, at the half. Olivarez College bled for points even more in the third, with Joshua Almejada saving the Sea Lions from getting blanked with a running shot just before the buzzer sounded.
Jayboy Solis was the lone double digit scorer for the Sea Lions with 12 points.
It was a big first tournament win for Garcia, who took over from Egay Macaraya who is now with San Sebastian in the NCAA.
“Ito ‘yung first league ko as head coach. I’m very thankful to God,” said Garcia, who also lives within the vicinity of the Olivarez College.
The UCBL has Franklin Evidente as president with Bernard Yang as technical head, Melo Navarro as deputy technical head and Horacio Lim as tournament director.
