DEFENDING champion Centro Escolar University goes for a sweep of the first round elims when it tackles the dangerous Diliman College side on Saturday in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 2 at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.
Game time is set at 2 p.m. with the CEU Scorpions determined to nail their seventh straight win at the close of the first round elims of the 8-team tournament.
But it won’t be easy.
For one, the Blue Dragons are also on a roll, having won their last four games for a 5-1 record – thanks to stellar showing of Adama Diakhite.
Meantime, Lyceum-Batangas and Bulacan State University square off at 12 noon with both teams out to revive their faltering semis bids.
Both teams have similar 1-5 records, making today’s game a must win if they are to improve their semis chances.
The Scorpions are coming off a 68-57 thumping of struggling University of Batangas Brahmans two days ago in a game that saw top center Rodrigue Ebondo play limited minutes after suffering a hyperextended left knee injury early in the third canto.
So expect the 6-foot-7 Congolese to have his hands full against Diakhite who is consistently posting double-doubles.
CEU coach Yong Garcia, however, has enough bodies to contain the 6-foot-9 Diakhite if Ebondo can’t effectively handle the task.
“We’ve been giving our backup big men enough exposure in our past few games because we’re already preparing them for situations like this,” said Garcia, referring to the likes of Louis Baconcon and Nigerian Ebuka Umeanozie.
