CENTRO Escolar University and Bulacan State University try to forge a four-way tie for the lead when they take on separate rivals on Thursday in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque City.
Coming off an easy 60-43 win over last year’s runner up Olivarez College, the CEU Scorpions are favored to stamp their class over the newcomer Lyceum-Batangas Pirates in the opener at 12 noon.
Bulacan State U, however, will have its hands full when it faces the dangerous Technological Institute of the Philippines Engineers at 2 p.m.
If both CEU and BSU prevail, they will tie Diliman College and Colegio de San Lorenzo for the lead at 2-0.
The Engineers are out to redeem themselves after absorbing stinging 67-65 loss to the Diliman Blue Dragons.
Despite their lopsided win over the Olivarez Sea Lions and the Pirates’ crushing 112-77 loss to the Colegio de San Lorenzo, CEU coach Yong Garcia is taking their game seriously, saying: “We can’t take anybody lightly.”
Garcia also likes to see if their offense will improve after relying mainly on big man Rod Ebondo the last time.
“I want to see my players execute better offensively. They have the tendency of being impatient in running our plays that usually lead to turnovers. I’m hoping they will be better moving forward,” he said.
The BSU Gold Gears scored a hard-earned 89-86 victory over University of Batangas last week and coach Antonino Tayao is expecting another tough grind against an Engineers side.
