CEBU CITY – University of the Visayas took the lead in the finals of the 2018 Cesafi Partner’s Cup Preseason Tournament, walloping University of Cebu, 78-60, on Sunday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers played most of the game without Ivorian import Lassina Coulibally, who injured his knee with just three minutes remaining in the first.
Instead of crumbling, UV uncorked a 14-0 run in the second behind the hot shooting of team captain Josue Segumpan and reserve guard Sheldon Gahi to lead by as many as 22, 42-20.
The M. Lhuillier Webmasters got to within 11 points, 48-59, early in the final period but the Green Lancers steadied themselves and pushed the lead back to 15, 70-55.
Segumpan finished with 22 points, while Gahi added 14. Gileant Delator, the team’s starting point guard, chipped in 10.
The Webmasters got 19 from Justine Dacalos and 15 from John Jabello. Frederick Elombi was held down to just five points, all coming in the second half, on 2 of 9 shooting. And although he tried to salvage his performance by pulling down 18 rebounds, the Cameroonian shot himself in the foot by committing a whopping seven turnovers.
New recruit Darrell Shane Menina was just as anemic, scoring just five while missing 10 of his 12 attempts from the field.
