CEBU CITY — University of the Visayas got back to its winning ways as the Green Lancers slipped past the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 67-61, on Tuesday in the opener of the best-of-three series for third place in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Playing with renewed focus after the ugly semifinal loss to University of San Carlos several weeks ago, the Green Lancers pulled away late in the match with an 11-2 run to take a 1-0 series lead.
Rookie Jerome Napao had 20 points and eight rebounds, while John Abad added 13 markers.
The Cesafi rankings will determine the seedings in the Visayas-Mindanao Qualifying Games in the 2014 Philippine Collegiate Champions League later this month.
The Jaguars were still ahead 52-49 when the Lancers uncorked the telling run that was sparked by two three-pointers by Abad and put them in front for good, 65-54, 2:33 left.
Mark Labares paced USJ-R with 14 points, while Kevin Villafranca chipped in 11.
