CEBU CITY — University of the Visayas scored an 87-77 victory over University of San Jose-Recoletos at the start of the round-robin semifinals of the 15th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
UV got off to a sizzling 19-4 start before USJ-R got their bearings and pulled to within two, 29-31, after a three-pointer by RJ Dinolan.
Leonard Santillan, a former Batang Gilas, answered with a 10-point spree of his own to raise the lead to 40-32.
Santillan finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Arong added 18.
Cameroonian big man Steve Akomo had 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Alfred Codilla had 10 points, five assists and five steals for UV.
Dinolan led USJ-R with 18, while Miguel Gastador and Jaybie Mantilla tallied 17 apiece.
USJ-R wingman Tricky Peromingan is feared to have suffered a broken rib in bad fall in the third period.
Peromingan, a former Far Eastern University guard, rose for a shot and landed hard on the knee of UV’s Leonard Santillan who was trying to take a charge. Peromingan was motionless on the floor for several minutes and was attended to by the medical team led by Dr. Rhoel Dejano before being stretchered off and brought to a hospital.
