CEBU CITY — The University of the Visayas Green Lancers debuted with a dominant 74-53 beatdown of the University of San Carlos Warriors in the 2019 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Thursday, September 12, 2019, at the Cebu Coliseum.
UV actually started slow, scoring a measly six points in the first period before rookie guard Gabriel Cometa came in and injected the Green Lancers with some much-needed spunk to help them eventually take the lead, 26-25, at halftime.
The Green Lancers then took advantage of the absence of USC’s Nigerian forward, Sommy Managor, who was sent to the bench after committing his fourth foul early in the third canto. Not long after that, UV uncorked a 16-3 run capped off by two straight transition layups by Cometa to establish a 49-34 lead.
UV eventually led by as many as 29 points, 72-43, before cruising to the easy win.
Cometa ended up with a team-high 14 points.
“I just stayed ready. I’m the third string guard so whenever our starting guards don’t play well, I have to stay ready,” said Cometa.
Veteran forward Jancork Cabahug also found his groove late and finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Lass Coulibally, who played limited minutes due to foul trouble, still produced a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
USC, which dropped to 1-1 after opening the season with an 80-75 overtime victory over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, got 15 points and six boards from Jules Langres and 13 points and eight rebounds from Froilan Mangubat. Managor ended up with just 10 points after scoring 28 last time out.
