UNIVERSITY of the Visayas scored a 76-71 win on Tuesday to complete a sweep of University of Cebu in the Cesafi Partner’s Cup finals night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The win completed UV’s unbeaten run through the tournament, capped by a 2-0 series win in the finals against their bitter rivals.
The Green Lancers pulled out an ace card in seldom-used forward Michael Maestre who scored 13 of his 20 points in the fourth, including a bank shot that came off a drop pass from teammate Rey Suerte that gave them a 73-71 lead with 18.3 seconds remaining.
The M. Lhuillier Webmasters had a chance to tie the game but Justine Dacalos could not convert, and an uncontested layup on the other end by UV guard Sheldon Gahi made it 75-71 , with 2.7 ticks remaining.
In a fit of frustration, UC’s head coach Yayoy Alcoseba threw a chair on the floor and earned a technical foul call, which Suerte converted into a free-throw for the final tally.
Suerte finished with 17 points while Gahi came off the bench and scored 11 markers.
Cameroonian big man Frederick Elombi scored 22 points for UC but committed two consecutive turnovers in the final minute off listless outlet passes, that paved the way for Maestre’s go-ahead bucket.
Paul Galinato chipped in 17 while fellow backcourt mate Justine Dacalos contributed 11.
The 18th season of the Cesafi is slated to kick off on August 25.
