CEBU CITY — University of the Visayas put on yet another dominant fourth period showing to beat Southwestern University, 83-73, on Sunday for their fifth win in a row in the 17th Cesafi basketball tournament at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Skipper Josue Segumpan led the defending champions with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

Sophomore guard Tristan Albina added 14 points, Liberian big man Bassiere Sackor scored 12, while reigning MVP Rey Suerte had 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

UV’s fifth in six games gave them a tie for the lead with University of San Carlos.

Up, 61-60, at the start of the fourth, the defending champions went on a 12-4 run with Segumpan hitting a triple that made it 73-64 with six minutes remaining.

A free-throw by Edmundo Bayhonan and a trey from Mac Racho got the Cobras back to within five, but the Lancers did not budge, retaliating with another triple from Albina and a lay-up from Sheldon Gahi that came off a sweet post pass from Sackor, which raised UV’s lead to 10 with 2:40 left.

Daryl Nazareno had 15 points off five three-pointers for the Cobras, who absorbed their fourth loss in five games.
