THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers are set to play Technological Institute of the Philippines at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Elite Eight of the 2015 National Collegiate Championship at the First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities Gym in Tanauan, Batangas.

But as early as 10 a.m., the Cebu-based squad were seen already getting a good sweat as they had to push the coaster they were riding in one uphill stretch of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) after it conked out approaching the Tanauan tollgate.

According to head coach Gary Cortes, they had no choice but to push the coaster all the way to the tollgate after smoke was seen coming out from under the hood.

The traffic patrol enforcer on the scene instructed them to get the vehicle to the tollgate to avoid causing a traffic jam, so players and coaches alighted and pushed the bus on an uphill portion of the expressway, Cortes added.

That certainly isn't the best way to prepare for a tournament, considering the Green Lancers players had to wake up at 6 a.m. to make the three-hour trip to Batangas from Manila.

“We didn’t have to push the bus very far but it was tough because the road was going uphill,” said assistant coach Van Halen Parmis.

Cortes though, didn’t mind the inconvenience so long as the team managed to arrive at the venue safe and sound.

“Okay lang. At least umabot na kami dito,” added Cortes.
