CEBU CITY — University of the Visayas ended the first round with a convincing 102-82 win over University of Southern Philippines Foundation in a rugged affair in the 2019 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The latest chapter in this heated rivalry between the two teams saw two UV players — Gileant Delator and Jiesel Tarrosa — get ejected with 2:15 left in the third after they got involved in a skirmish with USPF’s Sameen Swint and Mhike Patalinghug.
It was a heated third-period stretch that saw a total of six unsportsmanlike fouls and five technical fouls called on both teams which share bad blood especially after engaging in a free-for-all during a game in Minglanilla last December.
The skirmishes did little to stop the Green Lancers from crushing the Panthers as they took full control of the game in the third, thanks to the outside sniping of Froiland Mangubat who scored three of his five triples during that stretch that helped UV turn a slim 42-37 lead into a comfortable 78-61 advantage heading to the final canto.
The Green Lancers then scored the first seven points of the fourth to bury the Panthers further and eventually come away with their fifth win in six games.
Seven players scored in double-figures for UV led by Maglasang’s 15 points. Reserve forward Melvin Butohan added 14, Sheldon Gahi put up 12, Jancork Cabahug and Michael Maestre had 11 markers each, while Saga and Coulibally fired in 10 points each.
USPF ended the first round with an even 3-3 card. Swint and Lyndon Colina led the Panthers with 16 and 15 points, respectively.
UV and USPF will not have to wait long to see each other as they face off in the very first game of the second round on October 8.
