CEBU CITY — Froiland Maglasang banked in a Hail Mary shot to lift University of the Visayas past University of Cebu, 74-73, on Sunday and into the high school finals of the 17th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Down one with just 5.3 seconds to go, Maglasang received the outlet pass a step inside halfcourt and quickly launched a shot that hit the glass and found the bottom of the net.
The Baby Lancers completed a nine-game sweep of the elimination round and earned an outright spot in the best-of-three championship series.
Beirn Laurente led UV with 20 points while Jhiey Paraldo contributed 14. Star forward JJ Rosete battled foul trouble all game and managed just 10 before fouling out with 7:07 left.
Maglasang had just seven points but it his last shot proved to be the difference-maker. UV trailed by as many as 10 but recovered to take a 53-46 lead at the start of the fourth.
UC turned the tables around and regained the advantage, 72-71, after Virlou Orquez split his free-throws with 19 seconds to go.
After a UV possession that resulted in a turnover, UC guard Kyle Ordeniza was fouled and sent to the line where he made the first but missed the second. Fortunately, power forward Allan Pelegrino nabbed the offensive board and kicked it back out to Orquez who drew a foul, with just 5.3 ticks left.
But Orquez missed both from the line to set the stage for Maglasang’s heroics.
Orquez scored 31 for UC, which fell to 4-4. The Baby Webmasters had the win in the bag had it not been for their atrocious free-throw shooting, which included four misses in six attempts inside the last minute of the game.
