CEBU CITY – University of the Visayas is one win away from ending the reign of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu after scoring a 69-59 victory in Game One of the 17th Cesafi high school basketball tournament finals on Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Skipper Jim Paul Amistoso, Beirn Laurente and Joshua Yerro hit the crucial buckets to push UV ahead after squandering a 14-point lead.
UV looks to bag its first title in five years in Game 2 on Thursday.
The Magis Eagles fought back from the double-digit deficit to take a 47-46 lead.
But Amistoso sparked his team with a nasty crossover that led to a layup that put UV ahead, 48-47, heading to the last canto.
Amistoso scored five straight while Laurente sank consecutive transition layups to push the Baby Lancers lead to eight, 57-49.
Ateneo de Cebu responded with five straight points to pull to within three but Amistoso again delivered, scoring a scoop shot before Laurente completed an and-one to bring UV’s lead back to eight once again, 62-54, with 3:37 to go.
Laurente finished with 14 points while Yerro scored 11 and had 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Amistoso also scored 11, while Jhiey Paraldo added 10.
Patrick Yu and Christian Manaytay led the way for Ateneo de Cebu with 13 points each while Jed Colonia added 11 on 4 for 13 shooting.
