    USJ-R Jaguars edge UC Webmasters and spoil Frederick Elombi’s 39-point outing

    CEBU CITY – University of San Jose-Recoletos outlasted University of Cebu, 87-83, on Sunday in the 17th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

    The Jaguars, playing their fourth game in a week, took over in the fourth quarter with a 16-3 run that led to their eighth victory in 10 games.

    The Jaguars are running second behind University of Visayas, which is at 8-1.

    Leading MVP contender Jaybie Mantilla had 30 points, making 11 of 11 shots from the free-throw area, to go with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.

    Julius Pacanuayan had a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards along with four steals while Miguel Gastador had another strong outing with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and five steals.

    The Webmasters trailed by 10 but turned things around and held a 68-64 lead heading to the fourth. But the Jaguars came alive and tied the game at 71-all before surging ahead with nine unanswered points capped by two free-throws by RJ Dinolan to put them up 80-71, with 2:53 to go.

    UC pulled to within three, 81-84, after two straight lay-ups by Justine Dacalos with 21.3 seconds left but Dinolan and Albert Catiloc swished three free-throws to secure the win for USJ-R.

    The Jaguars overcame Frederick Elombi’s monster 39-point, 15-rebound outing as the Webmasters fell to an even 5-5 record, with Southwestern University-Phinma (4-6) trailing them in the race for the final spot in the semifinals.

    USJ-R 87 - Mantilla 30, Pacanuayan 13, Gastador 10, Catiloc 9, Dinolan 9, Compra 6, Navarra 4, Peromingan 3, Nunez 3.

    UC 87 - Elombi 39, Puerto 13, Dacalos 12, Jabello 9, Codilla 4, Olmilla 3, Tagudin 2, Galay 1.
