UNIVERSITY of San Jose-Recoletos got twin-digit contributions from three rookies to score their first win of the season, a 73-59 rout of Cebu Institute of Technology-University on Tuesday in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Kevin Villafranca, Iron Suano and Mark Labares scored 11 each, while team captain James Regalado had 10 points and six rebounds as USJ-R came up with a win after two losses and handed CIT-U its second loss in four outings.

USJ-R also held their own on the defensive end of the floor and clamped down on CIT-U’s high-scoring forward Joshua de la Cerna, who was limited to just 13 markers on 3-of-19 shooting. Allan Dimco paced the Wildcats with 19 points.

The Jaguars erected a 36-20 lead at halftime and boosted it to 56-36, heading to the final frame. The lead reached a high of 24, before De la Cerna, who at one point was made just one of his 18 attempts, teamed up with Dimco on a 16-6 run to pull within 11, 53-64.

That rally though was cut short by Mark Labares who canned two free-throws and Mark Villafranca, who banked in a leaner to restore order and push the lead back to 15, 68-53, with 3:07 to go.

CIT-U resorted to fouling USJ-R’s import Quentin Luzoladio, who shot an awful 1-of-12 from the charity stripe. But time ran out for CIT-U who just could not muster enough offense to overcome the deficit.

In the juniors division, CIT-U registered a 90-75 victory over Cebu Eastern College.
