CEBU CITY — Cameroonian reinforcement Shooster Olago and power forward Charles Pepito delivered the killer baskets down the stretch to lift University of San Carlos over University of the Visayas, 79-75, in overtime on Thursday in the round-robin semifinals of the 15th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Shackled by countryman and UV counterpart Steve Akomo for most of the game, Olago took advantage of an isolation play to break down the latter, draw the foul and make an and-one play that shattered a 74-all deadlock with 43.6 seconds remaining.
After a UV miss on the other end, Pepito sank an acrobatic lay-up to make it 79-74, with 17.9 ticks to go.
UV’s Jerome Napao split his charities for the final score.
Pepito registered another double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds, Olago finished with 19 points and 10 boards along with four blocks and two steals. Ian Tagapan also had 14 markers.
The Warriors gun for a sweep of the semis when they take on University of San Jose-Recoletos on Saturday. The Warriors are determined to make it back to the finals after falling short against the Southwestern University Cobras last season.
USC led 68-61 with a little over two minutes left in regulation USC, which had only 10 players, rallied to within two, 68-70, after two free-throws by Akomo, 34.9 left on the clock.
USC had a shot to seal the win but wingman Ian Ortega missed a wide-open triple.
Jun Manzo Manzo led the Lancers with 20 points, seven rebounds and three assists, Akomo scored 17 and Rey Suerte added 14 markers.
UV must win its last semifinal assignment against Southwestern University on Saturday to book a seat in the finals.
