CEBU CITY – The University of San Carlos Warriors got back on the winning track after upsetting the University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars, 74-65 in the 2018 Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The huge win placed the Warriors back in the hunt for a spot in the Final Four just a day after losing to the previously winless Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats. USC now stands at 3-6 (win-loss) while USJ-R fell to 5-3 and into a tie for third place with the University of Southern Philippine Foundation.
Nigerian forward Sommy Managor and reserve wingman Jules Langres sparked a 10-0 run that broke a 59-all tie and give USC a 69-59 lead.
The Jaguars pulled to within six, 63-69, after consecutive baskets from Jaybie Mantilla but Langres quickly slammed the door shut on USJ-R with a free-throw and two straight transition layups to bring the lead back up to double-digits, 74-63 with under a minute remaining in the game.
With several key players gone, including guard John Aranas and big man Kent Cabanog, Langres stepped up and scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half, to lead USC in scoring.
Another reserve, Magic Marata, pumped in solid numbers as he scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half. He also had eight rebounds.
Managor, meanwhile, collected a double-double, scoring 16 points and pulling down 12 rebounds.
RJ Dinolan and Mantilla scored 15 each to pace USJ-R. Mantilla however, was atrocious from the field, missing 17 of his 24 attempts. He did however, stuff the stat sheet with eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
