CEBU CITY – University of San Carlos grabbed the lead in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament with a 73-68 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats on Wednesday at the Cebu Coliseum.

It was USC’s sixth straight win after losing the season opener, pushing the Warriors to the top over idle Southwestern University (5-1).

Cameroonian import Shooster Olago and Congolese reinforcent Espoir Toyambi pounded the undersized CIT-U frontline into submission.

Olago finished with 16 points, scoring 10 in the fourth period when the Warriors pulled away late. He also had seven rebounds and two steals.

Toyambi wound up with 13 markers, including eight straight in the third which kept the Wildcats at bay when they crept to within two, 40-42.

USC started off strong and led, 27-16, after the initial 10 minutes of action and 42-33 at halftime. But the Wildcats battled hard and eventually pulled to within two, 63-65, late in the final frame.

The Warriors responded with Olago swiping the ball for an unmolested lay-up that was followed by a transition bucket by Victory Rabat for a 69-63 lead, 2:04 to go.

Wildcat forward Joshua de la Cerna broke out of his scoring slump and pumped in 26 points, while Allan Dimco added 25 markers. However, those weren’t enough to stop CIT-U from falling to 2-5.

In the juniors division, University of the Visayas earned their sixth win in seven game, beating University of Cebu, 91-80.

Wily guard Orlan Wamar led UV with 20 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals while Joshua Flores was equally brilliant with 19 points and 11 boards.
