USC grabs solo second in Cesafi with victory over CIT-U

CEBU CITY – University of San Carlos took solo second place after downing Cebu Institute of Technology-University, 72-62, in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Warriors used a 14-4 run in the fourth quarter to seal their second win in three games, second best behind the SWU Cobras who have four wins.

Wingman Ian Ortega led USC with 14 points, 12 coming in the third where they held a 50-44 lead.

Cameroonian import Shooster Olago had 12 points and 17 rebounds, while Congo’s Espoir Toyambi added 11 markers.

The Wildcats trailed by as many as 11 but came back strong to tie the game at 58 with 3:32 to go after nine straight points by Joshua De la Cerna.

Kiefer Lim sparked the USC breakaway with a triple and a steal for an uncontested layup, then Christian Laude followed it up with a strong drive that put them ahead, 65-58, with a little over two minutes left.

De la Cerna paced CIT-U with 17 points and nine boards but Allan Dimco finished with just nine points on 4-of-13 shooting as the Wildcats fell to 2-3.
