JUN Manzo's decision to return to Cebu and rejoin the University of Visayas Green Lancers is bound to run into problems with University of the Philippines, which an official claimed has tied down the crack guard to a contract.

UV team manager Gerald Anthony Gullas confirmed to SPIN.ph that the spitfire Cebuano guard has indeed decided to come back to the Green Lancers camp after a short stay in Manila with the Maroons.

“Things just really fell into place. He texted me yesterday (Saturday) and he even played for my team last night,” shared Gullas in a conversation on Saturday morning.

Manzo’s shortlived stay with the UP Maroons will be costly as he will have to sit out an entire year before he can suit up again for the UV Green Lancers under Cesafi eligibility rules.

The move, however, is set to be challenged by UP management, with assistant team manager Mel Macasaquit claiming Manzo and another Cebuano transferee, Leonard Santillan, had signed contracts with the Maroons.

“Both Jun Manzo and Leonard Santillan (another Cebu recruit) have signed contracts with the UP Maroons,” said Macasaquit, adding that “those contracts are good until they graduate.”

According to Macasaquit, Manzo returned to Cebu last week with tickets provided by the Maroons, supposedly to secure documents needed to complete the transfer from UV.

The player has not returned and has already suited up and seen action for the Green Lancers, he added.

“With regards to Manzo, he asked for a plane ticket to Cebu last week to get his release papers from UV,” said Macasaquit. “Last Tuesday, he asked us to rebook his flight back to Manila to give him more time to process his release papers. He eventually missed his flight last Friday."

Asked what course of action the state university will take, Macasaquit said, “We will be discussing this with Boss Dan (Palami, UP Maroons team manager).”

Paul Desiderio, a former UV Baby Lancer standout now with the Maroons, said he too was left in the dark regarding Manzo’s decision.

“They’re the ones who are in constant contact with Jun (Manzo) since we’re already busy preparing for the UAAP. That’s why I really have no idea Jun has gone back to UV already,” said the proud son of Liloan.

“That’s their decisions. I have no problem with that. If they need me, I’m here,” said the former Cesafi juniors MVP.
