CEBU CITY – Veteran guard Josue Segumpan sank a mid-range jumper in the final seconds to lift the Worthy-University of the Visayas Green Lancers over bitter rivals Phinma-Southwestern University Cobras, 76-72, in the 8th Cesafi Partner’s Cup on Saturday evening at the Cebu Coliseum.
Though the match was merely a preseason game that was played in front of a sparse crowd, the two teams went at each other with the intensity of a playoff.
In the end though, it was Segumpan that made the difference as he calmly brought the ball up in transition, stopped on a dime and banked in the game's most important shot with 31.9 seconds left, 74-72.
The Green Lancers then put up a terrific defensive wall that thwarted Cobras star Mac Tallo on his drive the next time down the court. UV forward Jerome Napao was then fouled and made both free throws to extend UV’s lead to 76-72, 13.6 seconds left.
The Cobras flubbed several three-point tries as time expired.
High-leaping guard Rey Suerte tallied 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in a stellar all-around performance for UV. Reinforcement Bassiere Sackour added 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Napao scored the same number of points.
Tallo, the reigning two-time Cesafi MVP, paced the Cobras with 15 but it was not enough to keep SWU from suffering its first defeat in three outings.
