CEBU CITY — University of Southern Philippines Foundation downed University of Cebu, 70-67, on Tuesday to notch its second win of the season in the 16th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Panthers led by as many as 19 before weathering a spirited comeback attempt by the Webmasters.
Both teams now have 2-6 win-loss records.
Sweet-shooting big man Roy Quiachon led the Panthers with 18 points including a couple of triples in the third when the Webmasters pulled to within two, 43-45, after being down by 11-30.
Lyndon Colina added 14 while Jayson Cando came off the bench and sparked the Panthers with his energetic play that saw him net 11 points, five rebounds, three steals and a block.
UC did not go down easily as it crawled to 65-68 after a free-throw by Gileant Delator, 1:11 to go.
UC even had several chances to come closer but Jhan Jabello lost the ball to the sideline on one possession and Justine Dacalos forced up a bad shot on another which led to a free-throw by Kenneth Cada which gave USPF a 69-65 lead.
Two free throws by UC’s JR Puerto cut the deficit to two and the Webmasters had one more shot at tying the game or even taking the lead after Cada missed two from the line. But Jabello, who was left wide open from the right corner, shot an airball and Cada split his charities with three ticks left to up the lead to 70-67, three seconds left.
Gileant Delator heaved up a shot and missed from halfcourt with two ticks to go, to give USPF the morale-boosting victory.
Roy Quiatchon had 18 points, four rebounds and four steals for the Panthers while Jayson Cando added 11, five boards and three steals.
Dacalos had 15 and Puerto scored 13 to pace reeling Webmasters.
